Sambalpuri/Animals

A common feature of the Sambalpuri language is the use of specific prefixes and suffixes to indicate the biological sex of animals. The prefix ଅଣ୍ଡିରା (Anḍira) is added to denote the male counterpart of an animal, while ମାଇ (Māi) is used to denote the female counterpart. Another widely used method is the addition of the suffix -ଣୀ (-ṇī) to the name of an animal to signify its female form, whereas the male form is generally understood to retain the original name of the animal without modification.
